READ AND UNDERSTAND ALL INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE BEGINNING YOUR DO IT YOURSELF FLOORING
1. Sweep the deck thoroughly at the beginning and end of each step in the deck preparation stage.
2. Install Tuf-clad drip flashing to the outside edge of the deck with minimum 1 ½” galvanized ring nails. Overlap each piece minimum 1 ½”.
3. Determine how you are planning to install or detail the vinyl at the inside edge or walls of your home or structure. It is always recommended that you run the vinyl up the wall as far as possible with the optimum being 6” to 8”.
4. Mix a cement based floor levelling compound (filler) according to the directions and apply to all T & G joints and surface imperfections. Create as smooth a surface as possible when applying the filler as this will determine the finished vinyl appearance. Allow the levelling compound to completely dry and then using a hand scraper, putty knife or sander, scrape or sand smooth.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Tufdek ® recommends you install Tufdek ® vinyl on new plywood only.
5. Layout Tufdek ® vinyl to ensure the fewest possible seams. Keep in mind you are trying to install the vinyl panels with the seams facing away from the building or away from the direction of the water drainage which is usually the same. Layout your first panel at the point furthest from the wall and allow enough vinyl to hang approximately 1” over the Tuf-clad drip flashing. Unroll the vinyl and adjust to ensure it is parallel to the wall and / or deck edge. At this point you should have one vinyl panel in the exact location you want it, check to make sure it reaches or extends beyond all the required areas. Once it is glued down you will not be able to move it.
6. At this time you need to keep the vinyl from moving out of place while you begin the process of applying the Tufdek ® adhesive. We recommend that you tack the vinyl in place with staples along the inside or upper edge side of the vinyl.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not staple vinyl in any areas other than the 1 ½” area that the next panel will overlap the preceding panel. The Tuf-weld cement will seal these holes.
7. Before you begin the process of gluing the vinyl to the deck you need to confirm the areas where the Tuf-weld cement is going to be used. You can either mark these with a pencil or apply masking tape on them to ensure you get no Tufdek ® adhesive on these areas. If you get Tufdek ® adhesive on any areas where you will be using the Tuf-weld cement you must remove it or the Tuf-weld cement will not work.
8. Fold the vinyl sheet back just beyond half its width starting from the outside edge. Apply Tufdek ® adhesive to the deck surface ensuring not to get any adhesive on the Tuf-clad flashing, secondly apply Tufdek ® Adhesive to the back side (smooth non-textured side) of the Tufdek ® vinyl. Let the adhesive partially dry until tacky or stringy, test the adhesive by touching your finger to the back of the vinyl.
You can push the vinyl down and out by hand or with a plastic spreader. IMPORTANT NOTE: The purpose of pushing the vinyl down and out is to remove any trapped air under the vinyl and to ensure both glued sides come in contact with each other before they fully dry. You must get all the air out and ensure the adhesives come in contact with each other while still tacky.
10. Remove the staples (if used) from the edge of the vinyl. Fold the other half of the vinyl sheet back just beyond half its width. Apply Tufdek ® adhesive to the deck surface, secondly apply Tufdek ® Adhesive to the back side (smooth non-textured side) of the Tufdek ® vinyl. Let the adhesive partially dry until tacky or stringy, test the adhesive by touching your finger to the back of the vinyl.
11. Subsequent vinyl sheets must be overlapped 1 ½” to the adhered vinyl sheets. To prepare subsequent sheets, place a piece of 1 ½” masking tape to the underside edge of vinyl where the overlap will be. It is necessary to follow this step to ensure the regular Tufdek ® adhesive does not interfere with the Tuf-weld cement. This tape will be removed prior to the application of the Tuf-weld cement.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Tuf-weld cement must be used for all vinyl to vinyl welds. You must use Tuf-weld cement on all your Tufdek ® vinyl panel overlaps, Tuf-clad pre-formed corners and your adhesion to the Tuf-clad flashings. The Regular Tufdek ® adhesive used to adhere Tufdek ® to the deck surface will not bond vinyl to vinyl. It takes approximately 30 minutes for the Tuf-weld cement to cure. You may need to place something on top of the welded area until cured. A 2”x 4” piece of lumber will work.
12. Applying Tuf-weld cement:
Temporarily apply 1 ½” masking tape 1/16” away from the overlapping edge. This is to catch the excess Tuf-weld cement and leave a consistent line of Tuf-weld cement as a barrier at the seam edge. Apply a 1/16” thick by
1 ½” wide layer of Tuf-weld cement under the overlapping edge. Using your plastic spreader, apply pressure lengthwise, then crosswise, squeezing some of the Tuf-weld cement from beneath the seam onto the masking tape. Remove masking tape. IMPORTANT NOTE: To ensure the overlap bond is secure, look eye level with the edge of the seam, you should see a consistent line of Tuf-weld cement along the edge of the vinyl. This line of Tuf-weld cement should fill in any voids between the two layers of overlap creating a water tight seal. Add more Tuf-weld cement if needed.
13. Trimming Tufdek ® at walls:
The proper way to waterproof your deck at up-stand walls is to run the vinyl continuously from the level deck surface up the wall in one piece. Run the vinyl up the wall as far as possible remembering the optimum distance is 6” to 8”. We recommend you remove the bottom row of siding to achieve this detail. Once you have Tufdek ® vinyl up the wall, seal with a bead of outdoor polyurethane caulking then overlap the vinyl with the building’s exterior building paper. IMPORTANT NOTICE: Do not use silicone or latex based caulking with Tufdek ® vinyl as they are not compatible.
14. Trimming Tufdek ® at outside edges:
Trim Tufdek ® vinyl even with the outside edge of the Tuf-clad flashing; ensure you do not cut the vinyl layer on the Tuf-clad flashing. Apply a layer of Tuf-weld cement under the vinyl overlapping the Tuf-clad flashing. Using your plastic spreader, apply pressure lengthwise, then crosswise, squeezing some of the Tuf-weld cement from beneath the vinyl out onto the Tuf-clad flashing.
Wood posts on deck:
Trim Tufdek ® vinyl flush around the base of wood posts, use Tuf-guard pre-made corners to wrap around the posts. Use Tuf-weld cement between the Tuf-guard corners and Tufdek ® vinyl to form a waterproof detail. To ensure the overlap bond is secure, look eye level with the edge of the Tuf-guard corner, you should see a consistent line of Tuf-weld cement along the edge of the vinyl. This line of Tuf-weld cement should fill in any voids between the two layers of vinyl creating a water tight seal. Add more Tuf-weld cement if needed. IMPORTANT NOTICE: If you are not able to use Tuf-guard pre-made corners you can seal the vinyl to the post with polyurethane caulking.
Tufdek ® adhesive first aid treatment:
Tufdek® vinyl comes in a 64" width. As with carpeting, fewer seams or overlaps result in a better appearance. To determine the correct amount of vinyl sheeting required, allow for:
Tufdek® recommends the seams run perpendicular to the slope of the deck so the water runs away from the seam. It is up to the homeowner to accurately measure the deck in order to decide on the most economical or aesthetical pleasing way to install the vinyl.
Exterior Grade select plywood or good one side 5/8" or 3/4" T&G sanded plywood is strongly recommended. To fasten the plywood use treated deck screws. Set screws just below surface. Screw sheets every 6" around perimeter and space 12" on the centre joists. Stagger plywood sheets, leaving 1/8" expansion joints around the perimeter of each sheet.
Important: Blocking must be used under the plywood for unsupported joints.
